The Sloughi, also known as the Arabian sighthound, is a rare breed of hunting dog from northern Africa that pursues its quarry by sight rather than by scent, thereby qualifying it as one of the many breeds of dogs known as sighthounds. Included in this group are the Sloughi's more famous cousins such as Afghan hounds, greyhounds, salukis, whippets, Italian greyhounds, and Irish wolfhounds. (This list is by no means exhaustive!)

Like all sighthounds, Sloughis are sensitive to correction, and coercive, corporal training methods are not suited to them. (Although it should be noted that as dog training has evolved, it is now understood that heavy handed, punitive training methods are not suited to any dog.)

(ARBA), the States Kennel Club (SKC), the United Kennel Club (UKC), and the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI). Although the American Kennel Club has yet to recognize the Sloughi, ASLA has worked hard to have the breed recognized by the AKC through the AKC's FSS service, a goal that has come to fruition. Sloughis can now be registered with the AKC FSS. However, recognition in AKC conformation events has yet to be accomplished.

Sloughis are eligible to compete in lure coursing through the the American Sighthound Field Association (ASFA), and, as of 2004, in obedience, agility, tracking and rally through the AKC.
